COVID-19 and its impact on the Shipping Industry in China
|
|
The global supply chain woes are strongly felt as China implement lockdowns one after another in different cities. China is still adopting its zero-COVID policy, which is said to have contained the outbreak of earlier variants such as Delta. Even with the highly transmissible Omicron variant, China is standing firm on their policy regardless of the costs and impact on its economy.

In the most recent lockdowns in China, Shanghai was faced with tough curbs since end March. Although the Shanghai port remains in operations throughout the lockdown, the restrictions on cross-border trucking and movement in the city have led to huge delays of container stuffing/unstuffing, and carriers have started to implement blank sailings and omit Shanghai port. With Shanghai being the largest city and busiest container port in the world, the lockdown is once again creating chaos, accumulating supply chain backlogs, and creating congestion issues for other ports. Some shippers have diverted their cargo to Ningbo where possible, resulting in congestion problems in Ningbo. With the stringent health regulations imposed by the Chinese government, there is no doubt there are limited truckers on the road, and the "losses" in Shanghai are definitely not retrospective of the "gains" in Ningbo.
As cases started to decrease in Shanghai, the neighboring Hangzhou and Beijing started their mass testing after spike in cases. After a suspected case in Guangzhou Airport, most flights were cancelled and mass testing begins for its residents as well. China is facing one of its worst outbreak since the peak of the first wave in early 2020. With the huge delays and unpredictable supply chain situations, it has accelerated the need for more regional supply chains and the concept of regional distribution centers are becoming popular again, with more stockpiles and less focused on just-in-time inventory.
Just as we thought that the global economy is starting its recovery, the COVID outbreak and the lockdowns in China are once again causing disruptions to the shipping industry, and we expect to see rates increase, space constraints and capacity issues for the rest of 2022.
